How I work

  1. Query and SERP-feature analysis

  5. Iteration

Who it's for

Brands losing clicks to AI Overviews for informational queries, and anyone who wants to be the cited source rather than the ignored one.

What actually earns a spot in an AI Overview

AI Overviews assemble an answer from several pages and cite a few. The pages that get cited share a pattern: they answer the question directly and early, they carry visible expertise (named author, credentials, sources), and they're structured so a machine can lift a clean, self-contained passage. If your answer only makes sense after three scrolling paragraphs of preamble, it won't be the one quoted.

The practical move is to write the way snippets and Overviews reward: a direct answer in the first sentence under each heading, then the detail. These are the same signals that win featured snippets, so the work compounds across classic SEO, AEO and GEO rather than splitting your effort three ways.

Measurement is the honest part. There's no dedicated "AI Overviews" report, so I read the fingerprint in Search Console - impressions steady or rising while CTR softens on informational queries - and pair it with AI referral traffic in GA4. The goal isn't to "beat" AI Overviews; it's to be the cited source, and to protect the commercial-intent pages where the click, and the revenue, still happen.

Frequently asked questions

Should I opt out of AI Overviews with nosnippet?

Rarely. nosnippet also removes you from normal snippets, so you usually lose far more than you gain. AI Overviews explained →

Is this the same as GEO?

Related. AEO focuses on Google's AI features and snippets; GEO is broader, across all LLMs. See GEO →

Do AI Overviews appear the same in every country?

No - presence and format vary by market, language and query type. I check your actual target queries per market, not a generic checklist. See GEO →

Can you work on the other AI engines too?

AI Overviews are Google-specific, but the same citable-content work feeds ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot. I usually run them together. See GEO →
