SEO vs GEO: what actually changes
TL;DR
- SEO optimizes for positions in search; GEO optimizes for citations in AI answers.
- They share fundamentals: credible content, clear structure and entity authority.
- What changes is the target and how you measure - not the principles.
- You don't pick one: you work them together.
SEO and GEO answer the same question - "how is my brand found?" - on different surfaces. SEO fights for a position in the results page. GEO fights for a mention inside the answer the AI writes.
Direct comparison
| Criterion | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Results page (SERP) | AI-generated answer |
| Goal | Position and click | Citation and mention |
| Key signals | Content, technical, links | Entity, citability, Bing presence |
| Measurement | GSC: impressions, position, CTR | Prompt protocol + AI referral in GA4 |
What they share
More than what separates them. Content that answers intent, clear structure, E-E-A-T and structured data serve both. Weak SEO means weak GEO.
Should you pick one?
No. SEO brings sustainable direct traffic; GEO makes sure you exist where search is moving. I work both, in SEO and GEO.
A worked example
Say someone researches "best project management tool for agencies". In the SEO world, you want your comparison page ranking in the top results and earning the click. In the GEO world, you want ChatGPT or Perplexity to name your tool when asked the same thing - ideally citing that page. Same intent, same content foundation, two different wins: a ranked link versus a mention inside the answer. Optimize only for the first and you're invisible to the growing share of users who never see a results page.
How the day-to-day work differs
| Activity | SEO emphasis | GEO emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword/prompt research | Queries and search volume | Questions people ask AI, per platform |
| Content | Depth, intent match, links | Direct answers, definitions, sourced data |
| Off-site | Backlinks from authority | Mentions and corroboration models trust |
| Indexing | Google first | Google and Bing (Perplexity/Copilot) |
| Measurement | GSC positions, CTR | Prompt baseline + AI referrals in GA4 |
How to budget across both
You don't need a separate GEO budget so much as a GEO lens on the SEO work you should already be doing. The technical base, the citable content, the entity - they serve both. The genuinely GEO-specific spend is small: Bing indexing, prompt monitoring, and off-site corroboration. Practically, get SEO fundamentals right, add the GEO layer on top, and measure each on its own terms. Anyone pitching GEO as a wholly separate, expensive programme is usually selling novelty.
The common misconception
"GEO is replacing SEO." It isn't. GEO depends on SEO - weak crawlability, thin content and a fuzzy entity sink your AI visibility just as they sink your rankings. The honest framing is layered, not either/or: SEO earns the position, GEO earns the citation, and the same foundations feed both.

Common mistakes and how to do it right
I've seen teams waste months on a false dilemma. Don't choose - connect:
| Avoid | Do |
|---|---|
| ✗ Treating GEO and SEO as separate teams | ✓ Working them in one strategy: SEO feeds GEO |
| ✗ Dropping SEO because 'it's all AI now' | ✓ Keeping the fundamentals: no SEO, no GEO |
| ✗ Comparing GEO and SEO by the same metric | ✓ Measuring each its own way: positions vs citations |
| ✗ Expecting GEO results overnight | ✓ Giving it time: entity and citations build over months |
Tools I use and recommend
